SPOTLIGHT: Shannon Griscti

The employee spotlight series highlights UniversityJunction team members and what studying in college was like for us. As recent grads, we know the triumphs and frustrations of college education all too well. Hear from us on why we believe in what we do.

"When I was attending Brock University and taking Psychology, all I did was write essay after essay. After a while you not only run out of ideas but resources as well. Having University Junction would have been great because I could have had the opportunity to look at other students' essay ideas within the same courses and their resources they used that I otherwise would not have known about.

Another problem I faced involved group work. In a group of 5, 1 individual is always unavailable due to other commitments. Having the University Junction group function would have been a major asset because the individuals have the ability to meet on-line from anywhere, and accomplish exactly what they would have accomplished in person - but more efficiently and without 1 individual being left behind.

As a student, I always found it frustrating that it was such a challenge to find resources that could help me prepare for tests and assignments. Everything is scattered all over the place, and a lot of stuff I found didn't apply to my classes at all. It would have been great to have a site like UniversityJunction when I was in school- a database specifically designed to search for relevant course materials is exactly what I needed.

I would have also loved learning from students at other universities and colleges who were enrolled in similar programs. Asking questions of other students who were learning the same things from different professors would have helped me through all those times that Cole's Notes and Google couldn't!

University of Maryland- Go Terrapins!

This week, Jenny, Brittany and I went to visit the University of Maryland- College Park campus. Not only did we meet a lot of really interesting students, professors, coaches and TAs, but we also became enamored with a few squirrels on campus. Halfway through the week we learned that when students said we'd be doing a lot of walking- they weren't messing around. Discovering the campus buses was a lifesaver.

After chatting with students about UniversityJunction, here's a few things they had to say:

- "This sounds like something I should be using for Econ- I'll do anything to pass that class"
- "Awesome idea, why wasn't it created when I started school?"
- "I'd love to try the site, but the program won't run on my computer"
- "I've tried a few other sites that are similar, but the related resources is something I've never seen before"

We also made a few short visits to George Washington
University, Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. Here's a couple of guys at Georgetown sporting our gear.

This trip was a very eye opening experience for us - we learned a lot about what students want from the site, and a few things they could live without. Look out for some changes in the coming weeks, and keep giving us feedback!
